Juliet, a 65-year-old Manatee, Passes Away at Florida Zoo Following Recent Rescue

ZooTampa recently announced the passing of one of the world’s most venerable manatees, Juliet, who was believed to be around 65 years old. Juliet, a hefty 3,045-pound sea cow, had been a long-term resident at the Miami Seaquarium since the 1950s before being transferred to ZooTampa in December 2023 along with her former tank mate, Romeo. This move was part of a rescue effort to provide them with critical medical care at the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center, renowned for its specialized treatment of manatees facing severe health issues.

Upon their arrival, both manatees adapted well to their new surroundings, engaging with other manatees in the rehabilitation pools. “Romeo continues to thrive,” shared Cynthia Stringfield, DVM, ZooTampa’s senior vice president of animal health, conservation, and education. However, Juliet’s health was more precarious. “When Juliet arrived, there were many unknowns regarding her overall health,” Dr. Stringfield explained. “Given her significant weight and advanced age, she was one of the oldest manatees we’ve come to know.”

Tragically, Juliet’s health took a sudden downturn following a routine medical check-up, with issues likely stemming from her old age. “Juliet was a cherished member of our community and touched the hearts of many across the globe,” Dr. Stringfield remarked. Her legacy, according to ZooTampa, extends beyond her years, inspiring both professionals and enthusiasts around the world to develop a deep-seated affection for these gentle giants.

In her memory, ZooTampa plans to conduct a necropsy to understand more about the health challenges faced by elderly manatees. This could provide critical insights that might help in the future care of manatees, ensuring that the legacy of Juliet, the gentle sea cow, lives on in the hearts and minds of those dedicated to the conservation of these majestic creatures.
