In light of a startling increase in dog attacks on postal workers, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) is stepping up with a proactive initiative aimed at curbing these dangerous encounters. The 2024 National Dog Bite Awareness Campaign is set to roll out, focusing on educating dog owners about the importance of responsible pet ownership and the role it plays in the safety of mail carriers.
The urgency of this campaign is underscored by recent statistics revealing a sharp rise in dog attacks on postal employees, with over 5,800 incidents reported in 2023 alone. Cities like Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago have seen the highest numbers, with California leading the states in reported cases.
Leeann Theriault, USPS Manager of Employee Safety and Health Awareness, emphasized the daily risks faced by letter carriers. “A single encounter with an aggressive dog can lead to serious injuries,” she noted. “Promoting awareness and responsible pet handling is crucial for the safety of both our employees and the community.”
The USPS has outlined several strategies to help postal workers avoid these perilous situations. Training includes making a gentle noise to alert dogs of their presence, avoiding sudden movements that could startle a dog, maintaining visual contact with any dogs in the area, and never assuming a dog won’t bite. Additionally, carriers are instructed never to pet or feed dogs they encounter and to use a mail satchel as a barrier in case of an attack.
Tara Snyder, a seasoned letter carrier, shared her personal experiences, highlighting that even typically friendly dogs can be unpredictable. “It’s vital that homeowners ensure their pets can’t push through doors or gates while mail is being delivered,” she advised.
