Professor Pantalones: A New Beak for a New Lease on Life
Hailing from the lush landscapes of Southeast Asia and now a beloved resident of the Bronx Zoo, Professor Pantalones faced a dire prognosis with a tumor threatening his majestic beak. Under the skilled hands of Dr. Daniel Spector, the hornbill underwent a pioneering surgery to remove the tumor and received a 3D-printed prosthetic casque. This not only restored his physical appearance but also his role within the hornbill social hierarchy, crucial for his interaction and communication with peers.
Wednesday: From Peril to Purr
Wednesday’s journey began in the harsh streets of New York, where she was found with a severely injured jaw. Thanks to the efforts of AdvoCat Rescue and the financial support from the Emma and Georgina Bloomberg AMC to the Rescue Fund, Wednesday underwent transformative surgery by Dr. Django Martel. The procedure freed her jaw from its fused state, allowing her to once again eat and groom herself without pain, giving her a fresh start at life.
Mingming: The Little Dog with a Big Heart
Mingming’s tale is one of true grit. Arriving at AMC with a life-threatening intestinal mass, the Shih Tzu faced an uphill battle. An initial setback with blood transfusion compatibility didn’t deter Dr. Mariel Covo, who navigated through the complexities to remove the tumor successfully. Just when things seemed clear, Mingming developed an autoimmune condition, which was again managed with the expertise of AMC’s dedicated veterinarians.
Tammi Terrell: A Fighter with a Fragile Frame
Tammi Terrell’s story is one of resilience. Having battled and recovered from immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), she faced a new challenge with a precursor-targeted immune-mediated anemia (PIMA) that led to an emergency splenectomy. The quick and efficient surgery by Dr. Douglas Palma was crucial. In a twist of fate, when Tammi needed blood again, Mingming, despite her own health risks, provided the life-saving donation, showcasing the incredible bond between these animal patients.
