Dr. Henry E. Childers, a distinguished figure in the field of veterinary medicine, and former president of both the AVMA and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), passed away at the age of 93 on April 15, 2024. Dr. Childers, whose remarkable career spanned decades as a devoted small animal practitioner, was known for his unwavering commitment to the well-being of animals and his profound contributions to organized veterinary medicine.
Born on July 29, 1930, in Selma, Alabama, Dr. Childers developed a passion for animals and science at an early age. He pursued his veterinary education at Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1954.
Following his graduation, Dr. Childers served for two years in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps stationed in Boston, where he met his wife, Pat. Subsequently, he embarked on his professional journey, co-founding the Cranston Animal Hospital in 1957 in Cranston, Rhode Island, alongside his wife. His practice at Cranston Animal Hospital continued until his retirement in April 2014.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Childers remained actively involved in organized veterinary medicine, holding various leadership positions within the profession. He was a staunch advocate for professional unity and tirelessly worked to advance the field. His notable achievements include receiving the AVMA Award for his exceptional contributions to organized veterinary medicine.
Dr. Childers’ legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments. He was deeply engaged in his community, serving as commodore of the Edgewood Yacht Club in Cranston and as president of the Cranston Chamber of Commerce.
In addition to his professional and community endeavors, Dr. Childers was a loving husband, father to four children, and grandfather to six grandchildren. He leaves behind a lasting impact on the veterinary profession and will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
