Merck Animal Health launched NOBIVAC NXT 1-Rabies and NOBIVAC NXT 3-Rabies in the U.S. vaccines "for healthy dogs and cats 12 weeks of age or older" that use a 0.5-mL dose and remove adjuvants, preservatives, antibiotics, and thimerosal, according to the company.

The formulation change and what it buys

Merck said "the vaccine portfolio provides options for one- or three-year rabies protection." Dr. Laura Greene, "a Merck Animal Health internal medicine specialist," said the 0.5-mL dose "supports comfort and convenience during routine preventive care."

The non-adjuvanted formulation removes ingredients that come up when clients research vaccine components. Practices that field questions about rabies vaccine formulation now have a product answer: according to Merck, the vaccines are free of adjuvants, preservatives, antibiotics, and thimerosal.

The client conversation this changes

The smaller injection volume and the formulation changes address clients who ask about vaccine ingredients. The line offers differentiation in a required-vaccine category.

For practices that use three-year rabies vaccination, the line offers both durations without switching manufacturers. For practices using one-year protocols, the NOBIVAC NXT 1-Rabies option keeps the formulation consistent across the client base.

Our read

This is a product-differentiation play in a category where every practice has to stock something. The smaller dose and cleaner label give DVMs a better answer when clients ask about vaccine formulation, and they give practices a positioning option for wellness visits. The ordering decision practices face is whether the formulation is worth any price difference from current rabies stock, and the company did not disclose pricing in the announcement.

A required vaccine with a formulation story is a positioning tool, and practices that want to offer a cleaner-label option now have the inventory to back the claim. The risk is paying more per dose for a product clients do not ask for by name, in a category where regulation, not client preference, drives the purchase.
