The skills this particular fellowship builds, systematic review, meta-analysis, lab animal model optimization, are not the skills that get you hired as an associate, help you negotiate your first contract, or keep your schedule full.
Noguera's project is upstream biomedical research with no clinical application, no practice economics angle, and no regulatory or ethical dimension that touches day-to-day veterinary work. It is pre-clinical science, not practice science.

Vet schools benefit. Research training capacity supports institutional funding and faculty promotion. The cost falls on the student. The risk in our own take
We could be wrong about Noguera specifically. Some students do make the jump from DVM to research scientist, and some of them build careers that justify the debt and the opportunity cost. If she lands a faculty position or an industry role that uses both the clinical degree and the research training, the summer fellowship will have been worth it. The translational research pipeline still exists; it's just narrow, and vet schools keep feeding it as if it were wide.
We could also be wrong about the value of research literacy for practicing vets. A DVM who can read a meta-analysis, evaluate study design, and understand reproductive physiology at the level Noguera is working brings something to clinical practice that most associates don't have. The question is whether that something pays the loans.
What changes Monday
If you're a vet student deciding whether to apply for a summer research fellowship, ask the program director two questions: How many graduates from this fellowship are currently employed in research roles? And what do those roles pay? If the answer to the first question is vague and the answer to the second question is a number that doesn't service your debt, the fellowship is professional development in a direction you are not going.
If you're a practice owner hiring new graduates, the research fellowship on the CV signals something real: this person can read a study, think critically about evidence, and work independently on a long project. It does not signal that they know how to run morning appointments, handle an angry client, or manage their own schedule. Hire for the skills the job actually requires.
If you're a vet school administrator, the honest conversation is this: summer research fellowships are excellent training for a career path that employs a small fraction of your graduates. Funding them is fine. Calling them career development without naming the career and its market is not.
